How MC Bookkeeping migrated to Wagepoint 2.0: “The best five minutes of my life”

  • Name of practice: MC Bookkeeping
  • Owner: Meghan Cooper
  • Location: Hamilton, ON
  • Areas of specialization: Legal bookkeeping, not-for-profits, and events clients
  • Wagepoint customer since: 2023
  • Time to migrate a client from Wagepoint 1.0 to 2.0: 5 minutes

Meghan Cooper put off her migration on purpose.

The Hamilton, ON bookkeeper had one legal client still on Wagepoint 1.0 — the client that introduced her to Wagepoint in the first place. She was already running 2.0 for her other clients and for her own business. She just didn’t have room for another project.

“I was deliberately putting it off. It came at a time when I was very busy and I thought ‘I’m not sure I have time for this.’ But, eventually, I decided that I’m just gonna do it.”

All it took was five minutes

“It was the best five minutes of my life. I couldn’t believe how fast it was. I couldn’t believe how simple it was.”

The thing she didn’t think she had bandwidth  for took less time than a coffee break. And because she was already working in 2.0 for everyone else, finishing the move meant she stopped splitting her attention between two systems.

The one wrinkle, and how long it took to sort out

Migrations aren’t magic, and Meghan hit exactly one thing worth mentioning: the client had a specific deduction that 1.0 and 2.0 handle differently.

That’s the kind of detail that can eat a morning on other platforms. Here, it didn’t.

“It presented a whole four-minute challenge for me to figure out. But it was there, it was available, it was simple.”

Custom income and deduction types — profit sharing, gratuities, a one-off adjustment mid-cycle — are a few clicks in 2.0, at any point in the cycle or the year. “I don’t have to reinvent the wheel. I can just go and do it.”

What she’d tell another partner still on 1.0

Life on 2.0 turned out to be better than life on 1.0, and the parts Meghan uses most are the ones she notices least. Records of employment. Advance pay run reminders she can read without opening, because the client and the pay run are right there in the first line. And the in-app chatbot, which has kept her out of the support queue almost entirely.

“The chatbot and I are besties. Out of all the automated tools I’ve used in my career, that’s the only one where the answer is actually available, and it’s actually right.”

Her advice for anyone still holding off, in her own words: just do it.

“2.0 is a no brainer. The platform is so easy to use. I’m thrilled (and surprised) that it went as easy as it did.”
