Everything you need to know about T4 amendments

Last updated

You’ve submitted your T4s: Statements of Remuneration Paid and/or your T4As: Statement of Pension, Retirement, Annuity, and Other Income. Then, you spot an error. Whether it’s a typo in an employee’s name or a missing taxable benefit, don’t panic — as always, your friendly payroll team at Wagepoint is here to help you navigate T4 or T4A amendments with confidence.

In most cases, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) T4 amendment process involves submitting corrected slips that only update the specific boxes needing a change while leaving the rest of your original data intact.

Luckily for Wagepoint users, If you filed your original T4 and/or T4A tax forms through our software, we will help you process the corrections and file the amended forms directly with CRA for you.

How Wagepoint helps with T4 amendments

Starting in early March each year, Wagepoint 2.0 users can submit T4 amendment requests for the previous calendar year. There is no end date for amendments, so we’ve got your back whenever you need us.

The process is simple. To keep things running smoothly, here’s what we need from you:

  1. Prepare a CSV spreadsheet with the following information:

    • The reason for the amendment(s)
    • The form type (T4 vs. T4A)
    • Employees’ full names
    • The final value to replace in each box on the slip
      • For example, if Box 14 and 40 on the T4 need updates, we also need to know if Box 24 (insurable earnings) and Box 26 (pensionable earnings) need changes too.
  1. Upload the file securely

    • Use the secure upload folder within your Wagepoint account to share the CSV.

Important note: We cannot proceed with your amendment until these steps are completed.

  1. We handle the rest

    • After we receive your CSV, our team will process the changes and submit the amendments to the CRA on your behalf.
    • Once it’s done, we’ll provide you with a CRA submission number for your records.

Important note: If an amendment results in additional source deductions, you are responsible for remitting those payments directly to the government. Wagepoint cannot remit payments for previous years.

The DIY option: How to amend a T4 slip yourself

Did you know you can amend year-end forms like T4s and T4As yourself? If you prefer the hands-on approach or need to make a correction quickly, you can file T4 amendments directly with the CRA.

Amending T4s and T4As online

When making corrections online, follow the CRA instructions on how to make corrections after filing. This allows you to change only what is necessary while keeping the correct information intact.

There are two electronic options: Internet File Transfer (XML) or Web Forms.

How to file using XML:

  • Include only the slips that need amendments.
  • Use report type code “A” on both the summary and slips.
  • Enter all unchanged data on each slip. Update only the fields that require corrections.
  • On the amended summary, include totals only from the amended slips.
  • Complete the “Filer Amendment Note” on the summary page with the reason for the change.

How to file using Web Forms:

Web Forms have a few more nuances. We recommend following the CRA’s specific guides based on your situation:

Handling PIER or PD4R notices

Sometimes, the CRA spots a discrepancy before you do. If you receive a Pensionable and Insurable Earnings Review (PIER) or a Tax Deduction, CPP, and EI Discrepancy Notice (PD4R), don’t let the jargon overwhelm you. These notices simply mean the CRA wants to double-check your calculations. If this happens, reach out to our Product Support team with all pages of the document. We’ll help you review the notice and provide the next steps for your response.

Next steps for a stress-free year-end

Correcting tax forms is a common part of the business journey, and getting it right is the best way to protect your team and your compliance standing. Whether you choose to lean on Wagepoint support or tackle the CRA portals yourself, accuracy and clarity are your best friends.

The advice we share on our blog is intended to be informational. It does not replace the expertise of accredited business professionals. Remittance and reporting capabilities within Wagepoint vary by location.
